Assemblyman James Gallagher is right on in his authorship of a bill in the Legislature that would speed construction of a water supply “Intertie” pipeline to carry crisp and clean potable water from beautiful Paradise Lake to the community of Chico. Not only will this recapture stranded water that is being left unused and therefore lost to Butte County down the Sacramento River and out the Golden Gate, it will also be a much-needed boost to the health of our aquifer in Chico and its agricultural surrounds. Importation of this Butte Creek water will also augment Chico Creek to the benefit of migrating salmon. As PID interim manager and former Chico City Manager Tom Lando, Sr. has said, this project is a “win, win, win” for Butte County’s economy, citizens, labor and the environment.
The community of Paradise deserves our thanks and deep respect for their foresightedness and leadership in sponsoring this measure. This improvement to our regional infrastructure will be the linchpin to bring Butte County into compliance with the ominous Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) while preserving our economy and environment.
