North County water agencies announce winners in poster contest

Fourth-grade students entered a wave of colorful art in the annual Water Awareness Poster Contest, sponsored by North County’s water agencies. The agencies have chosen winners in the 2020 contest, designed to increase awareness of water conservation and ways to stop pollution.

Students created drawings with the theme “Love Water, Save Water,” and winners from each district will be featured in a free 2021 calendar offered at water district offices in mid-December. For the calendar cover, the districts selected the art by Xander Williams of the Valley Center Municipal Water District.

The winners from all participating districts:

Carlsbad Municipal Water District: Finn Bailey, first; Sophia Edson, second; Kent Huelsman, third; all from St. Patrick Catholic School. Students were awarded Target gift cards.

Escondido Water District: Gracie Scher, first, Quantum Academy; Filip Kupiec, second, LR Green Elementary; Angelaiya Nazareno, third, St. Mary School. Also finalists: Taylor Lampman and Jacob Marshall, Quantum Academy, and Lilly Gibbs, St. Mary School.

Oceanside Water District: Jeremiah Martinez, first, Ivy Ranch Elementary School; Evelyn Boren, second, Christa McAuliffe Elementary School; Lauryn Troupe, third, Christa McAuliffe Elementary School. Students received gift certificates.

Olivenhain Municipal Water District: Ruchika Kench, first, Stone Ranch Elementary School; Kylie Barbosa, second, Stone Ranch Elementary School; Ryan King, third, Flora Vista Elementary.

Poway Water District: Anoushka Soans, first, Painted Rock Elementary School; Ava Delaney, second place, Midland Elementary School. Winners received a framed copy of their poster, a water bottle with their poster picture on it and an Amazon gift card.

Ramona Municipal Water District: Kaydee Jimenez, first, Hanson Elementary School; Jacqueline Mendoza, second, Hanson Elementary School; Scarlett Mason, third, Mountain Valley Academy. Students received certificates and a bag of prizes.

Rincon del Diablo Municipal Water District: Rita Sadik, Bernardo Elementary School, $100 gift card, plus $100 gift card for art supplies for the classroom.

San Dieguito Water District: Evelyn Rose Boyle, first, Capri Elementary School, $100 gift card; Nevaeh Hejduk, second, Ada Harris Elementary School, $75 gift card; Taarika Kaur Sethee, third, The Rhoades School, $50 gift card.

Vallecitos Water District: Aryana Virdee, first, $75 Amazon gift card; Pragna Buggana, $50 gift card; Rick Santiago, $25 gift card; all from Carrillo Elementary School.

Valley Center Municipal Water District: Xander Agnos Williams, first, Valley Center Elementary School; Kambria Kidwell, second, Lilac School; Olivia Davis, Valley Center Elementary School.

Vista Irrigation District: Karmen Isabel Simons, first, St. Francis School, $100 award; Naiya Langley, second, Alamosa Park Elementary, $50; Angelica Zetina, third, Mission Meadows Elementary, $25.
